How did you get started in radio?Paul Hemmer hired me over lunch. He said, “Tell me about yourself.” I never shut up and I was hired!

Family: I grew up in Dubuque in a family of 6 which includes 3 brothers. I attended Nativity Grade School and Wahlert High School.

How I Got into radio: My best friend showed me how to work all the equipment to help out on weekends at his radio station and I was eventually given a chance to turn on the microphone. That was back in 1997.

Favorite line from a movie: “What? Over? Did you say over? Nothing is over until we decide it’s over! Was it over when the German’s bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!”

Funniest thing that has happened in radio: There are many but one that stands out is pushing a car back to the radio station in the middle of the night…The same car we were currently giving away as the grand prize in a contest! A co-worker took it for a spin around the block and called me after it stalled and he couldn’t get started again. I think he stills owes me lunch.

Name one thing you just hate doing: Cleaning the bathroom

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Went to Mardi Gras – Ended up w/ 3,748 beads.

Name something about yourself no one else knows: As a child living in Texas, I wanted to grow up to be a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader – obviously that was not to be.

Jesse Gavin is KDTH’s News Director. He anchors morning and noon newscasts each weekday. Jesse is a native of the Tri-States, growing up in Cascade. His first job in radio came while he was still in high school, and he’s been “on the air” ever since. Jesse has an extensive background of covering news across the state of Iowa, with past stops in places like Mason City, Pella, and Cedar Falls. His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including three First Place honors for Excellence in Anchoring from the Iowa Broadcast News Association. Jesse is a proud alumnus of Wartburg College in Waverly, and also cheers for the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Tennessee Titans. He has won a couple of chili cook-offs with his famous “Triple Pork Chili” and he likes to think he’s pretty handy around a grill. When he’s not reading the news, Jesse is usually watching sports, listening to live music, or bragging about his nephew, Rowan, who lives in the Twin Cities.

For 37 years, Ed Anderson has dedicated himself to broadcast news and information. When it comes to experience, Ed has done it all. From his first stint at KBBG in Waterloo where he covered all the bases as a news reporter, sportscaster, and disc jockey to his time behind the mic and in front of the camera on Waterloo Cablevision calling sports play by play to his days as assignment editor, newsman and farm director at KXEL. Ed’s hobbies include bass guitar, stand up comedy, and watching the National Football League.

Tim Lary covers the Tri-States and national sports scene. Tim is the play-by-play voice for Dubuque High School sports and the University of Dubuque Spartans. Over his broadcasting career, Tim has been honored by the Iowa Associated Press and Iowa Broadcast News Association for sports broadcasting excellence including many first place honors for his play-by-play work from the broadcast booth.

Outside of work, Tim enjoys time in Bible Study and church activities, spending time with family, running, fishing, metal detecting and following his favorite sports teams the Cardinals, Royals, Vikings, and OKC Thunder.
